D4Dignity-Blog Entry 1

It was a pleasure photographing at this annual fundraising event, which was kicked off with an amazing VIP Reception with celebrity guests Actress and Author, Mariel Hemingway and Actor and Television Personality, Chris Jacobs of Entertainment Tonight and The Insider.  This high-energy evening honored Designs for Dignity’s design industry volunteers and donors for their tireless work of transforming existing non-profit spaces of marginalized populations into more nurturing and functional environments – it was a real celebration of design for a powerful cause.

Kudos Co-chairs Wendy Cohen + John Michon, for an amazing, successful event at Ignite Glass Studios. The Designs for Dignity organization effortlessly raised $153,000+ that night!

Meeting Mariel was nice.  She’s a native Chicagoan. I found her to be very engaging and relatable as she shared her story and connected to the cause of the night.  One-on-one, she is quite down to earth and approachable.  It was well after the fact that I realized, I wasn’t even thinking of myself, I didn’t even grab a photo with her. Chris Jacobs of Entertainment Tonight, also a Chicago native, was a class act – quite suave. Artist Extraordinaire, Francine Turk, painted an amazing oil painting on-site for the auction.  She is so laid back in a cool, unassuming kind of way!  I loved her painting. Loved meeting and photographing her!

After this event, I was invited by Wendy Cohen, Co-Chair, into the exclusive group called PowerHouse SMART, a by invitation only membership for the luxury design build real estate industry.  I am looking forward to networking through Powerhouse SMART.

ILLINOIS SECRETARY OF STATE, OFFICE OF JESSE WHITE https://blaqandwright.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/4/ILLINOIS-SECRETARY-OF-STATE-OFFICE-OF-JESSE-WHITE-1

1-sec-jesse-white-candid-lr

ILLINOIS SECRETARY OF STATE, OFFICE OF JESSE WHITE | I enjoyed photographing Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian, Jesse Clark White.  He is such a delightful person. Upon entering his office, knowing that my Photographer’s Assistant is from the Philippines, he gleefully greets us with the traditional Tagalong greeting, “Mabuhay!”  His office has an impressive collection of Asian art.

My shoot with him was pretty quick, but very meaningful.  Amid a very busy office and a very demanding schedule, he maintains such impressive poise and attentiveness to his guests. My assistant and I appreciated his warm welcome and statements about our services:  “I like your style.  You and Veronica are quite impressive….very professional!”

His office is filled with awards, photos of dignitaries and special memorabilia; one he is especially proud of is an image of him at President Barack Obama’s Inauguration Ceremony in Washington, D.C.  Jesse White, the founder (1959) and coach of The Jesse White Tumblers, created the team to provide a recreational, athletic, educational and cultural enrichment experience for the team members.  That day, Secretary White and the Jesse White Tumblers were slated to head out and perform in Belize.  How exciting!  The members that comprise this impressive troupe are at-risk boys; this juvenile delinquency prevention initiative was designed to help youngsters grow to be upstanding young men.  I hope to feature more about them in a few months when the weather is warmer and they are “tumbling” outdoors.

Secretary White, “Salamat!”  Thank you for warmly receiving us!  Veronica and I shall treasure your kindness.

ILLINOIS SECRETARY OF STATE, JESSE WHITE, AND JOAN E. SCHENK. L.I.S.T. FOUNDATION

NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK | APRIL 14-20, 2013

“Communities Matter” is the theme of 2013 NLW sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA), headquartered in Chicago, IL. Since 1958, a week in April has been set aside to recognize the importance of Libraries. This year’s theme relating to Communities underscores the impact and need for Communities to have a place for information gathering and a place to circulate books and other media in a free setting provided by local and state funding.

Jesse White, our esteemed Illinois Secretary of State, is Illinois State Librarian. He joins ALA Honorable Chairperson Caroline Kennedy and all librarians and libraries in schools, campuses and communities nationwide in celebrating National Library Week April 14-20, a time to highlight the value of libraries, librarians and library workers.

ALA states, “Libraries today are more that repositories for books and other resources. They are the heart of their communities, campuses, and schools. They are deeply committed to the places where patrons live, work, research and study. They are trusted places where everyone in a community can gather to reconnect and re-engage with each other to enrich and shape the community and address real issues.”

State Librarian Jesse White was an educator in Chicago Public Schools before he was an elected official. I also held a position as Librarian with CPS and both of us realize the importance of Libraries. My foundation entitled: Libraries, Information, Services and Technology (L.I.S.T. Foundation) was founded in 2009 to first help promote libraries in CPS and now its direction is to establish libraries everywhere from high rises to coffee shops. Shannon Wright, of BLÄQ + WRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY, not only was with me in this endeavor since its beginning, but she served on my board as Executive Secretary and continues to encourage and support all forms of literacy.

RICHARD HUNT  – “Thrill of the Hunt” Black History Month Honoree on | By: Shannon Wright

As I walk along in Chicago and happen upon a sculpture, I know for sure before I even get close that it’s a Richard Hunt.  One I recently encountered entitled “We Will” (Circa 2005) located on the north side (Randolph) of The Chicago Cultural Center truly resonates with me.  As I noticed the energy and movement of the lines of each arm of the sculpture, chills came over me, for it depicts hope and faith that whatever the challenge we must overcome – we will.  I absolutely love Mr. Hunt’s prolific body of inspirational work.

FASCINATING, AMAZING | A PORTRAIT OF RICHARD HUNT

(SCROLL down… to view additional photos)

Richard Hunt.  Place that name in your memory bank and never forget it. In honor of Black History Month, I have decided to feature Hunt’s amazing career this February on BLÄQAZINE.

When Richard Hunt returned my phone call, I answered immediately, responding, “Wow, The Richard Hunt on my phone, I am going to faint.”  He replied, “Well, don’t do that, I’m not there to catch you.” This broke the ice to our initial connection.  As I read his extensive curriculum vitae online, I became more and more impressed by Hunt. His gifted hands have earned him the numerous awards and honorary degrees that color his expansive career.  This Chicago-born, African-American artist has earned the accolades and respect of many; among those in the fine art world, he is a household name.

On Monday, January 28th, I had the great privilege and honor of meeting and photographing Richard Hunt, world-renowned sculptor.  At 77, he is a handsome, gracious gentleman in every sense of the word.  When I arrived at his vast foundry on Chicago’s Lill Street, he was warm and welcoming.

The blaqstory (backstory): There was a moment when I felt a bit flustered, thinking, “This is a special moment, so make it count…blow it out.”  I looked down and suddenly realized that, before leaving home, I forgot to put my jewelry back on after moisturizing my hands.  Now, I was counting on impressing him, and my distinctive jewelry might have helped in making me appear shockingly fabulous and impressive to him…Rrrriiiight… (Get a grip, Shannon, who’s really impressing who here?)  Okay, okay, it was just a fleeting thought, but I found it hilarious.  (I can share a little vulnerability with you–I am so beautifully human!)  Although I wanted to show how honored I felt for this privilege of photographing him, he made ME feel special.

After perusing some of his images, I was reminded of the distinguished, well-loved actor, Sidney Poitier. Richard Hunt certainly possesses Sidney’s class, and both share the fact that they are legends in African-American history.

His massive foundry was a bit chilly, so he turned on this industrial-size heater that made things toasty in no time.  He asked more about me than I was prepared for as I had aimed for a conversational balance, making sure not to talk too much about myself.

But ultimately, it relaxed me; I was disarmed by Richard’s genuine interest in me.  I knew I was in the presence of greatness; I couldn’t help but notice his calm, majestic demeanor, or the fact that he was very kind, thoughtful and witty.  When I asked him to stand at his work station for a shot, he playfully lifted a hammer, as if to say, “This is a hammer.”  We then chuckled for a bit.  Upon learning that I sing, he asked, “Can you sing and photograph at the same time?  That would be interesting to see you photograph and sing at the same time.” I responded that I could and obliged, singing a gospel favorite, “Give Us This Day.”  Mr. Hunt’s response as he applauded was, “Wow, wonderful, wonderful.”  Click on the video link (below) to listen to a portion of the interview and serenade on BLÄQAZINE TV. Also see images at: Photostream: http://www.flickr.com/photos/blaqazine/

Studying his studio, my eye didn’t know where to look first.  His miniature sculptures have so much detail, and I thought, “There’s just not time to see it all.” I wanted to see everything, to not miss a thing, but as Hunt is busy making installations all over the U.S., time was of the essence.

As I spoke with Mr. Hunt, I found his honesty and candor refreshing. I noticed a pamphlet that emphasized the importance of the older generation teaching and passing down lessons to the younger generation.  How many times have you heard someone say, “Boy, they just don’t make ‘em like they use to?”  We must remember to learn the lessons from the older generation, to teach and learn how to be our best for the next generation, not only in life lessons, but in studying and mastering the arts.  Even today, music and art are vital to our children’s education.  As a homeschooling parent, I want to make sure my sons learn about the greatest artists in history. This week, my youngest child laid on the floor as he painted onto a canvas that was taped under a table; this exercise helped him. understand how difficult it was for the artist Michelangelo to finish painting the Sistine Chapel while on his back.  Maybe many of us don’t even realize that we have incredible artists like Michelangelo here in our very own backyard.  Richard Hunt is one of the living greats of our lifetime!

Hilton Kramer, art critic for the New York Times, has said, “African-American or otherwise, he will go down in history as the greatest sculptor of our time.”  I have asked a very dear friend of mine, Joan Schenk of Joan E. Schenk & Associates, to be a guest writer on BLÄQAZINE.  Schenk, who is also an amazing artist, has been friends with Hunt for more than 40 years.  Her perspective on this treasure of an artist will be a first-hand point of view, and much more of a true personal tribute.  Looking at the photograph of Mr. Hunt and myself (snapped by Joan), I smile.  It is always nice to have a commemorative image of my subject (or should I say, client) and me.  For me, this was the punctuation to a beautifully written sentence. This marked a very special moment in my photographic career thus far.   When he took my hand and placed his on top, I felt special and accepted, as though he was welcoming me and saying, “You are my friend indeed.”  Thank you, Richard Hunt, for opening your door to me.  I am in awe of your gifts, and am so grateful to know you.  In honor of Black History Month, I applaud and celebrate you!

JOAN | REFLECTION

Richard Hunt – The Man and The Artist by: Guest Writer – Joan E. Schenk

More than three decades ago, I became an Art Educator and joined the prestigious organizations National Art Education Association (NAEA) and Illinois Art Education Association (IAEA). The meetings, workshops and conferences almost always included the well-known Illinois sculptor Richard Hunt. He had graduated from the School of the Art Institute in 1957, and by 1973 had established his reputation in the art worlds of Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and Europe. Knowing him professionally was an honor. Getting to know him personally was a privilege that I will never forget.

In 1987, I was invited to the 100th year celebration of the Young Artists’ Studio by Carolyn Howlett, Professor Emeritas at the School of the Art Institute. Carolyn was Chairperson of the event, and as we walked around the pre-Gala festivities, she insisted on stopping to say “hello” to Richard Hunt, her former student in Art Education at SAIC. He was most gracious and arose from his table, greeting us with a warm hug and inquiring how Carolyn was doing with her book Arts and Craftmaking, where one of his early works was featured. I told him briefly about my venture into jewelry design along with my Art Education position, and we left our conversation at “we’ll talk later.” For us, “later” was 1993, when he was featured with nine Chicago artists at a first-ever event at the Union League Club of Chicago. From then on there were gallery collaborations, museum contacts at IMMA Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, and many other adventures that proved to be the beginning and end of my career in art.

When I assumed the position of Librarian for Chicago Public Schools in 2001, he wrote a lovely recommendation for me, saying both his mother and sister had been librarians. It is now 2013, so it will be forty years come September that I first met Richard. In those forty years I have witnessed his career highlights, his many shows throughout the United States, and I have photographed, on location, many of his works.

The ones I remember best were Growing Forward, Flintlock Fantasy, and Landscape Variation. Growing Forward was completed in 1994. It consists of a smaller figure being protected by a larger figure, yet it is allowed to step into life on its own. Flintlock Fantasy, now in a private collection in Detroit, shows Man and his fantasy with guns–Flintlock being the name of a gun maker. Of course I cannot fail to mention the puzzle Landscape Variation, which comes in bronze and silver. I was fortunate to own one of the solid silver editions which I have treasured for over 20 years. It found a permanent home on my coffee table, and everyone I’ve hosted has tried their skill at reconstructing the amazing intricate design. The list can go on and on by naming all his pieces and acknowledging their new homes, from The Sculpture Garden at the White House, to The Mountain Top, a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Memphis, Tennessee.

I suggest you look him up online and be amazed by his accomplishments! See the man he became in 1957 at the age of 21, to the handsome, refined, distinguished gentleman he is today, captured by photographer Shannon Wright. Richard has allowed me to work on my jewelry in his studio on Chicago’s Lill Street, and I have visited his Benton Harbor, Michigan Studio on several occasions.

When I see him on television, I am still awed by the fact that this great guy is a best friend, and so down-to-earth. Richard and I acknowledge each other’s birthdays–as well as our close mutual friend Jerome Hausman’s–every year. He is so prolific, meaningful, intelligent, well-read and well-versed in all things political on the local, national and world-wide front, and finally, so special, witty and great that the English language does not have the word I am looking for, so I will say it in Spanish: MAGNIFICO!

Thank you, Richard, for being such a good man and great citizen of Chicago and America, loyal friend and treasured artist.  Joan E. Schenk, Chicago, IL. Feb. 4, 2013

|| WHAT’S NEW + WHO’S NEW AT BLÄQ + WRIGHT? || January 2013

I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME NEW MEMBERS TO THE BLÄQ + WRIGHT FAMILY |  Announcing my NEW team + roster of associates, which seems to be growing daily.  They are:

VERONICA LABIANO | FASHION STYLIST, PHOTOGRAPHER

VERONICA LABIANO | FASHION STYLIST, PHOTOGRAPHER’S ASSISTANT

VERONICA LABIANO || FASHION STYLIST + PHOTOGRAPHER’S ASSISTANT | I work in the medical field but have always been very interested in the arts, particularly in the field of dance.

I love creative movements in dance; these movements express meanings that are so deep that words do not need to be said. I am amazed when I see dancers dancing their heart away. To me, the art of dance is an interpretation of life itself. As with paintings and photographs, you can see the beauty of one’s own life in the finished work.

I met Shannon in the summer of 2010. I was walking on the street when she stopped me and introduced herself, complimenting my attire and expressing an interest in photographing me. She was confident and determined to have me view her work. That was the start of a wonderful bond that we still share today. “We connected right away; it was as if I’d known her for a lifetime. She photographs me in a way that brings out the best in me. I’ve finally found someone who understands me, and  listens to what I want. It’s amazing how she transforms simple things into perfection. I simply love her and the quality of work.”

As her Assistant and Fashion Stylist, I’m very proud to be part of the BLÄQ + WRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY team. I can’t wait to “shine” with Shannon.

TRACY YOU | FASHION STYLIST, MANAGER OF THE BLÄQ + WRIGHT PET SUITE

TRACY YOU | FASHION STYLIST, MANAGER OF THE BLÄQ + WRIGHT PET SUITE

TRACY YOU ||  FASHION STYLIST + MANAGER OF THE BLÄQ + WRIGHT PET SUITE | I have always been surrounded by art as far back as I can remember.  I come from a family of educators; two of my aunts were art teachers, and they gave me the tools and inspirations that I needed. I created my first painting when I was 5 years old, participated in my first fine arts competition when I was 8, and had already visited Kashmir, India and Nepal with my aunts by the time I was 16, exploring the local artistic culture and history.  I can still remember the different landscapes and faces at the other end of my camera lens, the people whose ancestors built the past with their bare hands, their priceless smiles. I discovered that their dedication and pure passion for art were larger than life itself. These experiences further enriched my interest in art, giving me the determination to pursue it further.

After graduating from high school in Taiwan, I continued my education in the United States.  I graduated in 2002 with a Bachelor of Art degree from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, one of the most esteemed art schools in the world. Because the School of Visual Arts is where the best artistic minds meet, explore and grow, and New York City is home to some of the world’s best art and history museums, I was in the right place.  During this time, my mind was further exposed to the many different aspects of art. In addition to learning the techniques and history, I discovered new methods of finding inspiration in order to explore and create.  I was able to broaden my interests and refine my artistic sense and skills in painting, drawings, photography, graphic design and sculpture.

I met Shannon in October 2012 while I was strolling through downtown Chicago.  I was able to sense her passion and inspiration for photography immediately during our brief conversation. That is why I have decided to join the team at BLÄQ + WRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY. I believe Shannon has the talent, skills and heart required for great success–not just as business owner, but as an artist and passionate photographer.

HANNA AHN | EDITOR

HANNA AHN || EDITOR | I met Shannon in the perfume department of Nordstrom Michigan Avenue in December 2011. We bonded immediately over our mutual enthusiasm for fragrance, and have remained friends ever since!

I am a storyteller, fragrance fanatic, and an amateur salad chef. My primary interests are: olfactory memory (how memory and scent are connected), universal mysteries, fiction-writing, and the art of cooking. I am also a voracious reader and lover of literature, and I often share this interest in books with others through literature-related discourse. This interest is also expressed in my educational background; in 2009, I received a Master of Science degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree from the same institution in Creative Writing and English Literature.

Shannon is an exceedingly talented lady, and I am excited for where her vision will take her! I am delighted to be part of that vision as the managing editor of BLÄQ & WRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY’s website. I will also moonlight occasionally as a guest blogger, on topics related to fragrance and memory.

A New Dawn, A New Day, A New Life…| JANUARY 2013 https://blaqandwright.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/1/A-New-Dawn-A-New-Day-A-New-Life-JANUARY-2013-1

“IT’S A NEW DAWN, A NEW DAY, A NEW LIFE…”

|| I’M FEELING GoOoOoD |

I’m playing Nina Simone’s song, “I’m Feeling Good.”  It’s one of my favorite songs and helps me put some pep and purpose in my step.  Love Nina Simone…I feel like I can strut with confidence into the future.  The whole sajiscratchy, jazzy scatting that she so skillfully renders at the end of the song gets me every time.  Put her in your playlist, and you’ll be strutting, too!

‘It’s a new dawn, a new day, a new life for me…and I’m feeling gooood.’

Caleb Throop HS

EDITOR’S PERSONAL REFLECTIONS + WHAT I KNOW FOR SURE

January has already started with a bang.  I’m delayed in posting for this month because I have been working almost daily on shoots since the beginning of the year, which came my way unexpectedly.

Before I begin, I am sending a quick shout out to my little client, Caleb Throop, who’s pursuing a career in modeling and acting.  Wishing him the best as he’s waiting for terrific news from his recent showcase.  His photography session inspired me.  My headshot of him drew high compliments from the agencies and industry agents who were present.  What a little James Bond.  His highlighted images will post soon in the FEATURES + P3 – PHOTOGRAPHER’S PHOTO PICK section(s) of this month’s blog.  I was told he blew it out during his interviews and auditions.  Kudos Caleb!

I heard a story about a homeless man with a million dollar painting that he didn’t realize he had.  Imagine longing to be free from the persistent perilousness of homelessness, from the painful feeling of powerlessness.  Imagine how he racked his brains and wrung his hands wondering how he landed there.  How could he get out?  Maybe he was thinking…”If only someone would help me, if only I had this or more of that?  I don’t have what I need.  I can’t do anything about my situation.”  On and on…

This is such an inspirational metaphor for me.  I realized quite quickly that it is also my story.  I have talents stored-up that are worth, I believe, more than a million dollars.  It’s a very scary place up there in my brain.  So many inventive ideas and inventions line my imaginative shelves.  What has held me back?  Perfectionism!  Can you relate?  I’ve also spent years waiting for approval, advice, validation from certain people I perceived as ‘in the know.’  Or how about this one: I spent time waiting for endorsements and the ‘green light’ that never came.  Most of the advice received never encouraged true entrepreneurial pursuit–it was often viewed as or resigned to the pursuit of worldliness.  Accepting or obtaining advice from unqualified individuals (from people who are not experts and who don’t have your best interest at heart), can be, more often than not, fatal to the dream being realized.  However, even with this as the case, my #1 enemy was found within.  Perfectionism is crippling to an artist, to anyone with a dream.  Does he live in you, too?  Well, Mr. Perfectionism just had a violent eviction from my life.  Poof!  Bye-bye!  No more.

Because of perfectionism, of waiting to have all my proverbial ‘ducks in a row,’ progress in my life was halted for years.  How about the thought: “I’d rather wait and do nothing than release a body of work that may not be my very best.”  When others loved something I had created or done, I was the one to point out the flaw or where I felt I could have done better.  I held myself back from potential great experiences because I was waiting for perfection.

Miles Davis said he accomplished all that he did, because he never disqualified himself.  He understood how to deal with the enemy that can threaten to live within all of us.

I would stifle ideas and plans, waiting and wishing I had one more thing to make it absolutely perfect.  I now opt to strive for perfection, but am grateful for excellence.  I already have everything I need; it was here all the time.  I can now perceive it and accept it.  In faith, I’m ready to go with the strength I have.  Beginning with the homeless man’s story fresh in my mind–along with my mantra for 2013, which is taken from a passage in Isaiah 43 expressing how ‘God is doing a new thing’–I now have my imagination clearly in focus, and am seeing how it is ‘springing forth’ in my life.  The scripture asks, “Can you perceive it?”  I can.

What I know for sure is that we all have a gift or something to give.  What is holding you back?  Is anything?  Do you have a million dollar painting chucked in the attic or a dusty corner of your closet?  What amazing idea did you kill while it was in its infancy, when, if allowed to grow, it may have been or may be the next big thing?  Allow yourself to give birth to incredible ideas, even in the face of opposition and ‘nay-sayers’; place around you only those who truly have your best interest at heart, those who will build you up in your dreams.  Inspire someone!

Nick Vujicic is a wonderful man with no arms and legs.  He’s an Evangelist, Motivational Speaker, Author of “Unstoppable”, Founder of Life Without Limbs –”From No Limbs To No Limits,” Skydiver, Golfer, Swimmer, Surfer, Husband, and now… a Father.  In a word…WOW!

Image from Sunday Morning

Nick Vujicic | From No Limbs To No Limits!

If that’s not enough motivation to get in gear, I don’t know what is.  When I saw this story on Sunday morning, I wept.  He stifles any temptation in me to complain or make excuses for why I can’t do something.  I am blessed.  So are you.  Every day that we live truly is a new day, a brand new dawn, another chance to change our lives and others around us.  Let us live our lives as such.  I pray you have a great year!  Cheers!
